Privacy policy

This site shows information about the book The Elements of Strategy. It sets no cookies, uses no tracking or advertising tools, and loads no fonts, scripts, or images from other servers. The sections below explain what personal data is processed anyway, and why.

Hosting and server logs

This site is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. When you visit a page, Cloudflare’s servers process the data your browser sends with every request: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page, and your browser and operating system. This is needed to deliver the site and protect it against attacks (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Cloudflare is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and a data processing agreement is in place. I see only aggregated visitor numbers, not individual visitors.

Contact by email

If you write to me, I use your email address and what you write only to answer you (Art. 6 (1) (b) and (f) GDPR). My email is hosted by Google Cloud EMEA Limited, Dublin, Ireland, under a data processing agreement. I delete messages when they are no longer needed, unless legal retention periods apply.

If you sign up for the newsletter, I send you occasional emails about the book and about strategy. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email.

Signing up works by double opt-in: you first get an email asking you to confirm. To prove your consent, the time of signup and confirmation and your IP address are stored.

The newsletter is sent with Kit (ConvertKit LLC, USA). Kit stores your email address and records whether you open an email and which links you click, so I can see which topics interest readers. Data is transferred to the USA under a data processing agreement that includes the EU standard contractual clauses. Your data stays stored until you unsubscribe.

Links to shops and YouTube

The buttons to buy the book link to the shops that sell it, such as Amazon, and the video link opens YouTube in a new tab. Videos are not embedded on this site. No data goes to these sites until you click a link; after that, their own privacy policies apply.

Your rights

You have the right to access your personal data (Art. 15 GDPR), to have it corrected (Art. 16) or erased (Art. 17), to restrict its processing (Art. 18), to receive it in a portable format (Art. 20), and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future. To use any of these rights, an email is enough.
